The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US against five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were central to campaigns to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the decision.

The bans were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
