In a significant development ahead of next year's general election, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition comes in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal young people's protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.
A Pledge to Address Young People's Concerns
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly vowed to prioritize the issues highlighted by the younger generation. This commitment follows the violent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which resulted in significant loss of life.
"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane after the deal was finalized.
The September uprising was sparked by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a catalyst for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of systemic political corruption.
Terms of the Fresh Electoral Agreement
According to the official agreement, the roles for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread discontent with the nation's established political leadership. He has in the past served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's current political transition. He played a role in forming the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.
Broader Government Discussions Underway
In a separate development, the current interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with a number of leading political figures. These talks involved former prime ministers and the heads of rival major parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the protests.
After these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a collective responsibility. The message reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring a secure and fear-free environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
