Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff is in advanced talks to sell a portion of his shareholding in the Mercedes F1 outfit.

The deal values the Mercedes team at £4.6bn – a record for an F1 team – following the McLaren team were valued at £3.5 billion in an adjustment to corporate structure in September.

The Austrian executive, who owns one-third of Mercedes F1, plans to divest a stake in the region of five percent.

Wolff, aged 53 would stay on as team boss and CEO should the deal proceed.

Shareholder Breakdown

The other shareholders in the team are Mercedes and industrial group Ineos, who both hold one-third of the company.

An official representative stated: "We will be making no official statement on the matter. The governance of the team will remain unaltered, and all three partners are dedicated to continued achievements of the brand in Formula One."

Financial Increase

The deal would represent a significant increase in worth of Mercedes F1 after Ineos bought its share for £208 million in 2022.

The rise demonstrates the growth in market values of F1 teams recently as a consequence of the growing popularity of the sport around the world.

This trend was evident with the success of the Formula 1 film starring Brad Pitt, which debuted last summer and has grossed over $630m (£458m) at the box office.

The film represents the actor's top-grossing movie and the highest-earning sports movie ever released.

Present Standings

Mercedes are second in the constructors' championship, trailing McLaren, with three Grands Prix remaining in the current championship.

Their lead driver British driver George Russell has won two of the 21 grands prix so far and is fourth in the drivers' championship behind McLaren's Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, and Red Bull's Max Verstappen.

Mercedes won a unprecedented eight straight team titles and seven drivers' titles, six for Lewis Hamilton and one for Nico Rosberg, from 2014 to 2021.
